Item Description
5x8". Photograph identified "Lincoln - Washington Battalion Before Leaving Spain in November 1938."
Spain's liberal Popular Front issued a worldwide call for men willing to fight fascist aggressor Francisco Franco in what is often called the dress rehearsal for WWII, the Spanish Civil War. Even as the U.S. policy of non-interference refused Spanish visas, thousands of Americans joined the International Brigades as soldiers, medical personnel, technicians and pilots entering through France and naming themselves after famous Democratic leaders. Lincoln Washington was a key unit, rebuilt after every loss. Seen here at the Ruipol Repatriation point after Juan Negrin announced their withdrawal to the League of Nations as a peace keeping measure. While many enlisted to fight in WWII after their return to the United States, they were unilaterally denied military promotions and blacklisted by Hoover's Un-American Committee. Technically Good w/tape caption, corner bends and pin hole top right. 5.5x8.5" Flaherty Brothers printed photo double sided flyer. Irish American brothers speaking on their trench experiences, Carnegie Music Hall Pittsburgh, PA. Sponsored by Pittsburgh Friends of Lincoln Brigade. Soft center bend, Exc.. 3.75x9".
