Item Description
10.75x15.25". Glazed cotton. Listed by Herbert R. Collins in Threads of History as plate #349 on p. 179. The 35 stars in the canton are arranged w/clusters of four in each corner and 19 encircling the conjoined woodcut portraits of the 1868 Republican candidates. Campaign flags are the most coveted pieces of early political campaign material, w/flags featuring a candidate's portrait rising to 'blue-chip' territory and jugate flags to yet another level of rarity. Collins listed no jugate flags for campaigns prior to 1868 in his iconic text covering cloth Americana, Threads of History. This rarity is supported by the infrequence of jugate flag offerings in commerce, making them among the most coveted campaign textiles. Fourth and eighth stripes have small holes in cream field not affecting graphics. Otherwise scattered faint age throughout and light creases amounting to minor handling wear. Fine. Of the four examples known to us the present specimen is in the finest condition set apart by its properly aligned stripes, above average inking, and easily recognizable folksy portraits. An exemplary opportunity for those seeking the very best to obtain perhaps the highest-grade example extant.
