Notable classmates: W.C. Matthews (class of 1905) shows on the Baseball Team photograph (p.35). A stand out at Tuskegee, Matthews was actually sponsored by Booker T. Washington in his Harvard admission. He excelled so wildly under the unfathomable coaching of Cy Young his freshman year (1902) that the annual Ivy League Baseball Champion Trophy is named for Matthews, he was admitted to the College Baseball HOF, and played a year of professional baseball before pursuing law. Matthews represented Marcus Garvey and founded the Universal Negro Improvement League and was named the "Head of the Colored Division" of the Republican Party in 1924. This marked the first time that an African American was appointed to oversee the African American vote in the U.S.; Jose Petronio Katigbak (class of 1904, p. 133) is the first recorded Filipino student at Harvard. With a lauded education in the Philippines and degree from the Royal University in London prior, he pursued advanced themes in engineering at Harvard. Upon returning to the Philippines he was key in modernizing the country for a global role, implementing Daniel Burnham's city plan in Baugio and revolutionizing Manila's Public Works; Lathrop Brown (class of 1903, p.114) was Roosevelt's roommate at Harvard and each other's best man at their respective weddings. Albert DeRoode (class of 1904, p.93) remained a close friend to FDR and joined his law firm of Marvin, Hooker and Roosevelt in 1911.
