Item Description
8.75x11-15/16" four page stiff folder (center crease likely as mailed) printed on front only with silver embossed Trylon & Perisphere. The reply was to be sent to "The Chief of Ceremonials/World's Fair/New York" and lower right has pencil note "Declined/April 4/39/AEM" (initials). The invite is printed except for inked name "R. Walton Moore, Esq." Moore was a U.S. Congressman and one of the few Virginia politicians to embrace the New Deal. He later became a member of F.D.R.'s "Brain Trust". He was 80 in 1939 and died at 82 in 1941. To document this rarity we quote the text in full: "The President and Board of Directors/of the/New York World's Fair 1939/request the honor of the presence of/R. Walton Moore, Esq./at the/Official Opening/by the /President of the United States/of the/New York World's Fair 1939/on Sunday afternoon the thirteenth of April/Nineteen hundred and thirty-nine/at two o'clock".Very light tone on margins.
