Item Description
Quite large for this early 1906 era at 1.75" and complete with its Bastian back paper w/design used only in 1906-07. Button features a very well detailed illustration of this historic 42 round fight. On the left in boxing ring is referee and Nelson and on the right is Gans plus man leaning into ring at far right. Background shows ringside spectators and others on riser with roof supports in background. Gans was the first African-American world boxing champion of the 20th century and held the World Lightweight Championship 1902-1908. This button, the only example known to us, displays totally clean and glossy. The only condition issue is the slightest concave surface on the lower right quadrant. When this very minor dent occurred, it put two 1/16" stress lines in the cello and a couple even smaller to the right. Unless one knows these are present, they are basically invisible without magnification. Overall VF. Among the rarest and most historic boxing buttons we've offered. This button is unlisted in the book Boxing Pinback Buttons by Dr. Paul Muchinsky. Alan Weinberg Collection.
