Item Description
Each is 7/8". The stud-back on the left is from 1895, the first year celluloid covered lapel studs were made without a metal rim on the front. This is the earliest boxing lapel stud known. On the back, as designed, there are four small triangular metal cut-outs and the stud surface carries text  "Whitehead & Hoag Co./Newark, N.J./Pat/App'd/For". Cello has five tiny age dots on very bottom edge. VF. Rare. The stud-back on the right carries the same identical text but the metal back has three pinpoint tiny holes arranged as a triangle and the first year this style was used was in 1896. See following lot for a matching Fitzsimmons lapel stud. The Corbett has light surface wear and tiny upper edge scuff. Fine and rare. The 1895 stud is from the Paul Muchinsky Collection and the 1896 stud is from his 2008 book Boxing Pin back Buttons book photo example #16.
