Item Description
20x27" in matted frame w/13x20" opening. Produced by the New Jersey State Woman Suffrage Association. Top of the poster features a high contrast portrait of Wilson w/a quote by him below voicing his support for women's suffrage. Wilson had successfully avoided the suffrage issue for most of his first term, but he did vote for women's suffrage on the NJ ballot w/the qualification that he believed suffrage was a state, not federal issue. However, by 1917, the suffragettes had gained momentum and began protesting in front of the White House. The pressure put on Wilson and Congress eventually worked. The Amendment process began in 1919 and by August of 1920 the 19th Amendment was ratified. Horizontal and vertical folds down the center, otherwise scattered creasing and faint tan spotting, as well as an adhesive mark in the upper right corner. Moderate surface wear and handling. VF. Not examined out of frame.
