Item Description
5x6". Invitation to treaty celebration held on July 25, 1868 at the Metropolitan Hotel in Washington, DC.
Burlingame, the Minister to China in 1868, hosted the event alongside his wife and his Chinese counterparts, Chih-Kang and Sun-Chia-Ku, and "Associated Ministers Of The Chinese Legation". According to reporting from the event, President Andrew Johnson, as well his Cabinet, Supreme Court Justices, and members of Congress were in attendance. The treaty, which established peaceful diplomatic relations w/China, became known as the Burlingame-Seward Treaty. The invitation has an embossed "B" for Burlingame at the top, and the contents include the date, time, and location of the event. Slight aging along the left edge, otherwise only light surface and edge wear.

Anson Burlingame was a politician from Massachusetts who was a staunch abolitionist and member of the Know Nothing Party before helping found the Republican Party. He challenged Preston Brooks to a duel following the latter's infamous caning of Charles Sumner in Congress. After learning of Anson's expert marksmanship, Brooks backed out of the duel in humiliation.
