Item Description
7x11.25". Nov. 3, 1893 New York State Cleveland League meeting held by the Colored Citizen's Democratic County Organization to ratify the Tammany Hall ticket. John E.W. Thompson is listed as the President. Thompson was a physician appointed by Grover Cleveland to delegation posts in San Domingo and Haiti (he was succeeded in that post by Frederick Douglass). Upon returning to the United States Thompson established a medical practice in Mount Hope, NY while serving in the Cleveland League and later the Negro National Democratic Conventions. Important early document of African American political involvement, particularly reconstruction ballot reform. Heavy toning, original folds and loss at top edge. Good. Exceedingly rare example.
