Item Description
17.75x22.75" on woven paper tack mounted at top r/l corners to acid free board. Small text "Engraved By E. Huntington" at bottom center. The end of the War of 1812 marked a pivotal moment in national patriotism seeing renewed interest in the nation's, now 40 years old, history. At this point many Americans were unaware of the actual text of the Declaration of Independence and with those of the Revolutionary generation passing on, several engravers seized on the opportunity to advance the document around the current national mood. Benjamin Owen Tyler was first in 1818 followed in 1820 by Eleazer Huntington who produced the current offering. Huntington stripped the ornamental borders and frill of the Tyler print focusing more of the text and signatures. Huntington was a master calligrapher from Hartford, Connecticut and set about using his skills to capture the spirit of the original document, faithfully reproducing the famous signatures without exaggeration. Often found in schoolhouses these were used by educators teaching the country's history to the next generation of patriots. The present example has two repaired vertical separations; one at bottom enter and the other affecting top right of center extending into the "C" of "America." Missing bottom right corner has been filled in and there are faint moisture marks throughout. VG. Despite these flaws, this example remains bright and eminently displayable. An important early engraving of this critical founding document.
