Item Description
5.5x8.75x14.5" tall. Produced by Ives, Blakeslee and Co. of Bridgeport, CT. c. 1880. Clockwork mechanism housed in wood base with cast iron chair and seated figure. When wound Grant brings cigar to his mouth and moves head to one side. Cigar was designed to accept an insert and mechanism to utilize a bellows to draw in smoke and puff out perfect smoke rings. We did not test this but can confirm the mechanism winds and operates correctly. A wooden cigar has been fashioned to fit in the metal holder completing the look of this excellent display piece. The large scale of this toy, combined with intricate works made it a costly piece that retailed at $6; an equivalent of around $170 today. Few were produced and even fewer have survived. The present example has restoration throughout with paint wear including missing chips affecting face and overall general handling wear. Displays Fine.
