Item Description
23x30". The "Dewey Defeats Truman" error paper of the 1876 election. Headline reads "Glorious News" followed by "A Close Vote-Tilden Elected by Small Majority" along w/ portrait of Tilden. The newspaper breaks down each state and the victor, declaring victory for Tilden. However after a hotly contested election and widespread allegations of voter fraud and back-door dealings, Tilden's opponent, Rutherford Hayes, emerged victorious in the "Compromise Of 1877", also known as the "Corrupt Bargain Of 1877". Hayes ascended to the presidency in exchange for an end to Reconstruction, which led to a serious regression in civil rights for African Americans in the South. A few tears and areas of paper loss, most notably along the vertical fold in the center. Otherwise moderate wear and handling. VG. Mounted on cardboard ready for framing.
