''As a first step to the White House, I started touting Jack Kennedy for Vice President in my columns, and our newspaper distributed campaign buttons. But until we got to Chicago, the senator wouldn't commit himself to having his name placed in nomination.'' Finally, the night before the Democrats were to choose their vice presidential candidate, Kennedy decided to enter the race... Delegates ultimately chose Estes Kefauver and Quigly noted ''The Democratic ticket lost that year. But the campaign gave Sen. Kennedy the exposure that allowed him to run for president, and to win, the very next time around.'' He said Kennedy later would tell him, ''It all started with you.''
