Item Description
10.25x16.25" on thin paper w/two faint horizontal bends and overall minor even age. VF. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) used this ghastly image to illustrate the historical brutality faced by African Americans in the South. The image was intended to shock readers, rallying them to volunteer for the groups 1964 Freedom Summer Project helping register African Americans to vote. During the summer of 1964 over 80 civil rights workers were beaten and at least three were heinously murdered. The 1935 lynching of Bert Moore and Dooley Morton occurred after a mob in Columbus, MS took them from Deputy Sheriff Parker Harris of Lowndes County after being detained on accusations of attacks on white women.
