Item Description
25" tall. Steel ashtray. Four-sided base is 7.5x7.5". Red lettering on one base panel reads "AAFBS/Midland, Texas." Midland's Bombardier School started training on Feb. 6, 1942. Training ceased Jan. 1, 1946. Base lost its military standing later that year. Two opposite side panels have airbrushed illustrations of desert night scene w/two silhouetted cactus scene in front of full moon. Fourth panel has airbrushed/stenciled silhouette of WWII bomber. Top portion of bomb-shaped ashtray has four panels cut out from the upper half of the domed area. Each opening has a copper cigarette rest attached. Center of ashtray portion has swivel trap w/.45 ACP (automatic Colt pistol-standard military issue)caliber cartridge. The flat cartridge bottom has been cut off to remove powder and has been attached to center of ashtray pivotal trap. Made of heavy steel but not likely a true bomb casing. The very top has a five-point blue military star airbrushed on it. Insignificant paint rubs on center silver portion. Airbrushed panels on thin area remain bright and clean. Very well made. Interesting to note that any metal was in short supply during the war but this metal was used to make an ashtray. Very eye-catching design. VF.
