Item Description
On first encountering this stunning button, we mused that it was a great example of the homefront carrying on in the face of WWII. This was incorrect. In the late 1930s and into 1941, national corn husking contests drew over 100,000 spectators. National contests were broadcast live on network radio - thus providing ear to ear coverage. In 1936, even Time magazine declared corn husking "...the fastest growing sporting spectacle in the world." This stunning 3" button with cardboard back and bar pin, maker unknown, was readied for the big 1942 "National Contest" set for Oct. 29 with contestants from 11 states. However, the event was canceled as the chief reason was the conservation of rubber. It was deemed the travel to the  contest was "not essential to the war effort". Instead corn husking vacations were declared with schools closing for two weeks so the students could help harvest crops. Cardboard back has  a 2" surface tape mark but the cello remains high gloss and Exc. One known to us. Rare.
