Item Description
23x30". The "Dewey Defeats Truman" error paper of the 1876 election. Dated Monday, November 11, 1876. Headline from the Plattsburgh Republican reads "Victory And Reform! Tilden & Hendricks Elected! No North, No South, No East, No West; But A United Country! The Bloody Shirt Has Gone To Wash!" However after a hotly contested election and widespread allegations of voter fraud and back-door dealings, Tilden's opponent, Rutherford Hayes, emerged victorious in the "Compromise Of 1877", also known as the "Corrupt Bargain Of 1877". Hayes ascended to the presidency in exchange for an end to Reconstruction, which led to a serious regression in civil rights for African Americans in the south. A few tears and areas of paper loss, most notably along the vertical fold in the center. Otherwise some faint age toning in the center and moderate handling wear. VG. Mounted on cardboard and ready for framing.
