Item Description
15x13x6.5" hat. Original owner's notation on interior crown "S. S. Huck/Victor/N.Y." handwritten above the "Odenbach & Co/Rochester/N.Y." manufacturers mark. Victor, NY resident Susan B. Anthony had asked Greeley to support her demand for women's suffrage to little avail w/Greeley responding, "The best women I know do not want to vote." Nonetheless Mr. Huck appears to have been a Greeley supporter of the highest order- while a ferrotype badge or campaign ribbon might have been enough for many voters, Huck wore his support boldly on his head and chose a piece of head gear to match that of Greeley. Cotton hat band emblazoned w/the names of the 1872 Democratic/Liberal Republican ticket has hand stitched red edging and is sewn vertically along back edge affixing it to the hat. Ink remains bold and overall wear consistent w/moderate use, Fine. Hat itself has wear consistent w/use mostly at edges w/interior weathered and leather band detached but included. Despite flaws this piece has tremendous character and appeal, being perhaps the premier campaign headpiece we have encountered. That it has survived, for over 150 years, is nothing short of amazing. A special opportunity to obtain an impressive 1872 campaign artifact.
