Item Description
5.5x8.5" on thin stock. The event led by CORE, NAACP and SCLC was aimed at advancing fair employment and housing legislation in Washington, D.C. Two days prior Mississippi activist Medgar Evers was murdered in his driveway. The proximity to the noted activist's death drew Malcolm X and members of the Nation of Islam who joined demonstrators in front of the Justice Department. The group, reported at 3,000, listened to an impromptu speech by Attorney General Robert Kennedy who defended the department while conceding that more was to be done to address civil rights. Trivial age at edges, otherwise only minimal handling. Exc. Of file copy quality. A fascinating window into the summer of 1963 a little more than two months prior to the massive March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where Martin Luther King delivered his I Have A Dream speech.

Malcolm X was quoted by the Washington Post stating: "Whenever sheep try to integrate with the wolf, then there is a step forward for the wolf, not the sheep....They have fair housing in New York, but it is worse perhaps than here. This is nothing more than political trickery. The law means nothing when you are Jim Crow....The whites here and Kennedy were just salving their guilty consciences."
