Item Description
5x9-1/8x2" deep lt. brown thin cardboard box w/white paper printed label w/Outcault Advertising Co., Chicago, Ill." address at upper left. Printed and handwritten text across top "No. 366 for Month Of November 1910." Addressed to recipient in Dushore, Pa. We believe the writing in black fountain pen was done by artist/creator Outcault himself. Box contains four 4x4x7/8" thick wood blocks w/zinc plate covered by top surface in copper finish. Comes w/four 7.75x11.75" bw sheets of slick paper w/4x6.75" image and text area of art showing Yellow Kid in different situations w/hardware and text to match scene. Bottom of text on each reads "Blank Hardware Co." Scenes and captions include Yellow Kid swinging large hammer w/text "Hardware! And Tools 'The Best/We Hit The Nail On The Head Always," Kid carving turkey w/large knife and fork "Things For Thanksgiving Like Cutlery & Knives And Forks/The Best," Kid w/shotgun aiming at duck floating in bucket w/"Ammunition And Guns And Sporting Goods/I'm Going To Kill That Decoy," Kid w/large pair of scissors "Look Sharp! See Our Line Of Cutlery." Top of each sheet has suggested date for use and is numbered. Outcault's name and copyright appear at bottom of each illustration. Proof sheets have two horizontal folds as issued for insertion in box. Scattered lt. smudges at margins but overall proof sheets and printer blocks are NM. Box remains sturdy w/lt. surface dust. Fine. This set is shown in Hake Guide to Character Toys. YLW-37. Rare.
