Item Description
10.5x14.75". Some moderated edge wear, most notably small areas of loss on each of the corners, as well as some scattered small tears. Moisture mark in upper right corner w/some faint scattered spots. Some tape on reverse for stabilization. Prominent figures in foreground retain bold contrast. VG. Published by "H. R. Robinson 52 Courtland St." Sub text to title in bottom center margin reads "Like Boxers Thus Before The Fight, Their Hands In Friendship They Unite". Referencing Martin Van Buren's visit to Saratoga Springs, NY in 1839 depicting MVB and Clay greeting in a ballroom w/Sen. Nathaniel P. Tallmadge and Gen. Winfield Scott at left. Text of MVB to Clay "Mr. Clay you are welcome to the Empire state, I am quite rejoiced to see you so popular among the good people." Clay's response, "I thank you Mr. President for this cordial reception it is a proud and noble state and when thrown upon her own energies and resources uninjured by experiments she will be first in grandeur and prosperity as she is the first in population & patriotism." The "experiments" Clay references are regarding MVB independent treasury program linked to Andrew Jackson's abolishing of the Bank of the United States.

Gen. Scott observes that "Well Mr. Senator the great men are quite cordial I must say Clay's reception has been very chee[r]ing" w/Tallmadge responding, "He Deserves it Gen. deserves all that the people can do for him- first always in the service of his country and great even amongst the greatest". Tallmadge was an opponent of the fiscal policy of Van Buren. Mingling w/ladies in background are long haired unshaven men, one stating "A cool thousand that I will never shave again--I may be shaved but that's fashionable dem me" a reference to Clay's supporters who vowed not to shave until Clay was President.
