Item Description
10.75x16.5" unfolded. 8.25x10.75" folded. Letterhead features the portraits of the 1844 Whig ticket. Text at top reads "Huzza! Huzza! The Country's Risin." Dated September 21, 1844. The letter, addressed to "Dear Brother Edward," (Edward Chauncey Allen) decries the Polk campaign and the Loco Focos, calling Clay's opponents "loudly in favor of the annexation of Texas and indifferent to the perpetuation of slavery." The author lauds Clay as a "southern man but of national feelings." He similarly praises Freylinghuysen for his eloquence and morality, stating that it is an honor for him to "aid in elevating a man to one of the highest offices." Hole on the back page not seen when folded, and a tiny hole on front below "New York" beside the date. Otherwise moderate handling wear w/even aging and a few faint stains. Fine.
