Item Description
7/8" with back paper by W&H from 1900. Cronje was a general of the South African Republic's military forces during the Anglo-Boer wars of 1880-1881 and 1899-1902. This button from 1900 relates to his defeat at the Battle of Paardeberg where he surrendered with 4,150 of his commandos on Feb. 27, 1900 after being enveloped by Lord Roberts' forces. As he dangles from the lion's jaws by the seat of his pants, his rifle becomes a useless stick. After his surrender he became a prisoner of war on St. Helena Island where he remained until peace negotiations were concluded in 1902. NM. Two known. Rare.
