Item Description
44.75x47.75". Two sections of linen w/right/left edges open and top/bottom edges stitched along interior. Hand painted "Boxford Fremont Club" in banner above a chain link encircled star w/text encircling "Dissolve The Union? No! The North Will Not. The World Cannot." Other side has six line poem "A Freedom Of Speech,/A Freedom Of Thought,/A Unity, Earth Cannot Sever,/A Freedom Of Soil/By Blood Dearly Bought,/American Freedom Forever." Gold painted star has moderate vertical separations and minor loss. Along r/l edges there is a smattering of fabric re-enforcements on interior stabilizing small separations. Scattered small holes, obvious moisture marks and handling wear displaying the character expected of an artifact of this age and intended use. Good. Given 168 years of travels this is an amazing survivor displaying impressively. An imposing banner evoking the spirit of the 1856 campaign. All pre-Civil War political campaign textiles are extremely scarce and Fremont material is notably so. Collins Threads of History lists five Fremont banners (w/all but one in institutional collections) and we have encountered four others over the last 57 years.
