Item Description
50x86" on cotton. Hand painted headline text "The Whigs Of Plymouth Will Support The Hero, Patriot And Statesman, William Henry Harrison, The Farmer Of Northbend" followed by candidate quotation "As Long As The Leaders Of The Roman Armies Were Taken From The Plough, To The Plough They Were Willing To Return -Harrison-" concluding w/ slogans "No Subtreasury, No Executive Dictation. No Standing Army." Accented at top by 26 stars arching at top. Two holes of note; one between the "Return" and "Harrison" and the other just below "Harrison". Moisture scattered throughout. Edges have tattering from likely original being mounted to a wooden frame for use in a wagon parade. There are 22 newer white tacks securing the banner to a 96.5" long wooden board for ease in display. A monumental banner that is unlisted in Colins Threads of History. Textiles from the 1840 campaign are notoriously rare and this is among the largest we have encountered in private hands. A cornerstone artifact of the 1840 campaign and a dominating display piece in any setting. Rex & Patti Stark Collection.
