Item Description
5.5x8.25" single sided handbill for a lecture by Rose Pastor Stokes March 30, 1925 under Auspices/Boston School of Social Science. She was a social activist, writer, birth control advocate and feminist. In 1905, she married millionaire J. G. Stokes who supported the University Settlement on New York's Lower East Side. The same year they both joined the Socialist Party of America and in Sept. 1905 they joined Upton Sinclair, Jack London, Clarence Darrow and others in founding the Intercollegiate Socialist Society to encourage discussion of socialism on college campuses. Over the next years she traveled the country speaking about the cause and helping to picket, strike and organize for specific events such as the 1909 Shirtwaist Strike. She also organized meetings addressed by birth control advocates Margaret Sanger and Emma Goldman. Her criticism of US involvement in WWI led to an indictment for violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and a 10 year sentence in Missouri State prison. Although the sentence was successfully appealed, she moved further left abandoning the Socialist Party and in 1919 becoming a Communist Party of America founding member. Stokes helped develop the party into the 1930s. Between 1918 and 1921, she was the most-mentioned woman in American newspapers. Slight tanning of the paper. Excellent. Rare.
