Item Description
6x9" on thin paper. Text at top reads "Attention Battalion!" Handbill references Order 329. This is an attack on Garfield, who, along w/several other Republican and Democratic politicians of the 1870s, were implicated in the Credit Mobilier Scandal. Garfield allegedly received shares and was paid out $329 off of the scandal that rocked the Grant Administration. Others implicated included Schuyler Colfax, Henry Wilson, William B. Allison, to name a few. An investigation was launched, where it was found that over 30 politicians where given shares to the company, however, no charges were filed against Garfield or any of the other 30 individuals. The Democrats attempted to use Garfield's association w/the scandal to paint him as a corrupt politician, however, these attacks proved unsuccessful, as he was elected president in 1880. Small area of loss in upper right corner, as well as staining on "Battalion" and along top edge. Moderate wear and handling. VG.
