Item Description
12.5x18.25x1.5" deep celluloid over wood tray w/woven wicker edge. Made by St. Dunstan's Veterans Hospital in London c. 1930-1931. Disney provided the cello panel and veterans then did the wicker work to make pocket money. There are eight classic bw images of Mickey, all w/titles which are Mickey Himself, Mickey Leads The Band, Hello Mickey Greet You All, Poor Little Mickey Sad And Forlorn, Mickey Makes Some Music, Mickey And His Saxophone, Just A Song At Twilight." In between these images are additional illustrations of him w/Kewpie-like baby. Mickey is shown feeding, washing, snuggling and playing w/baby. The underside of tray originally had a .25" deep band of wicker material around entire outer edge to elevate it slightly from a surface but only about 50% of this remains. The top wicker frame around the celluloid surface remains complete and intact. A moisture stain runs along the right edge .25" to 1" wide. The green bkg. has some areas of discoloration to paler shade of green/tan. Across center design are several dozen scattered pinpoint cello nicks. There are several 1" to 2" hairlines in the celluloid, most notable are pair between bottom right two images as well as one across foot of large top center image. Despite these defects, overall appearance remains bright and glossy. A very nice piece for display. VG. There are only about five of this piece known and this is the first we've ever offered.
