Item Description
1.25" shows "Father Duffy" in uniform. Ordained in 1896, he was famous in Catholic theological circles and gained wider fame in his role as military chaplain for the 69th New York ("The Fighting 69th") later re-designated 165th U.S. Infantry Regiment. The unit served at the front in France and Duffy accompanied the litter bearers in recovering the wounded and was always seen in the thick of battle. The Regimental Commander Lt. Col. William 'Wild Bill' Donovan (later founder of the OSS in WWII) cited Duffy as a key element in the unit's morale. After the war, he wrote "Father Duffy's Story," a book which grew out of a manuscript originally started by Joyce Kilmer who had joined the regiment and became a close friend of Duffy's, but was then killed in France. Later in life he served as pastor of the Holy Cross Church in Hell's Kitchen, a block from Times Square until his death in 1932. 1/16" light age dot on far right edge. No backpaper as issued. Hake book Collectible Pin-Back Buttons photo example Wars section #158. Comes with Hake's COA. VF and displays Exc. See next related item.
