Item Description
5.5x10x12" tall paper-covered wood box holds 4.5x5.5x9" tall painted tin lantern with cast metal animal paw feet. 1870s. The paper-covered box shows wear to the covering and has areas revealing the lower lighter colored bottom paper layer or the actual wood of the box itself. The top of the box has slots for the sliding lid to go into. A 4" section on one side of this is missing. Applied paper label to the top of the box shows heavy aging and has a bit of paper missing on one side. Still visible is the scene of children and women watching a Magic Lantern show.Pictured as well are various medals apparently awarded the company. Underside of lid has applied label with instructions in three languages and "Made In Germany." The makers mark is shown which is a circle with wings and the letters "E.P". Lantern itself has overall wear to the black finish about 80% is still present. Inside the lantern is a removable lamp with fuel reservoir and adjustable wicks. This has clear glass lens on one end and colored glass on other for various applications. This lamp portion is brass. Also included is large curved painted tin smokestack to take heat away from lantern during operation. Set also comes with 2.5x5x9" tall interior paper-covered wood box with sliding lid which holds 12 glass lantern slides. Slides have a variety of scenes including performing animals, circus clowns, street scenes including winter ones, countryside scenes, and ships on the ocean etc. Aside from light wear to paper coverings on edges, these are Exc. Overall set is Fine. A nice example of this early type of amusement with a generous amount of slides.
