Item Description
One of our long-time collectors has consigned their exceptional 1939-40 NYWF button collection. The collection was assembled over more than 30 years with many extremely rare examples including many purchased from Hake's since the mid-1980s. Instead of splitting the collection up into dozens of groups, our consignor is interested in keeping the 95 pinbacks together. The collection includes 92 celluloid buttons and 3 tin litho, mostly 1.25" to 1.75" dia. with a few smaller or larger. They cover an amazing array of subjects, many of which cross over to multiple categories. Together they present a very complete record of the pinbacks issued for this historic and most collected of all expositions. The highlights include: 4 employee buttons including "Pre-Fair," 1939 (Hake Auction #136) and 1940 Emergency Construction & CIO Transportation Workers Union. 28 single-day events including two for Ford and some we have never offered before. Five contest "Contestants" buttons including Wurlitzer and two for Newsboys. Five conventions and short duration (2-3 day) events including rare left-wing "International Workers Order 5th National Convention." British Royal visit "Radio" button serial number 1209 (used for entire US tour). A rare printer's blue proof Trylon & Perisphere button (Hake Auction #136 cover photo). 22 Trylon & Perisphere buttons including many rarer examples seldom offered by Hake's. Both known Wonder Bread buttons, including the employees "Buy A Loaf Today." Color and b/w versions of Frank Buck's Jungleland (Hake Auction #136) and "Abbott & Costello." Midway buttons with rare backpaper showing "Streets Of Paris Lucky Number." 24 product advertising, foreign exhibit and souvenir buttons. Their collector was very discriminating when it came to condition. The entire collection is bright and clean and displays Mint. Our examination revealed just a couple minor imperfections on a few of the smaller buttons of lesser importance. We grade about 10% VF to Exc. and 90% N. Mint to Mint. Numerous items of which this is the only example known to us. A genuine opportunity to own an advanced high quality collection. The best known to us.
