The cover features a ray gun, a spaceship and a beautiful woman. The publisher, Fiction House Magazines, felt that the readers were often buying the covers. To a great extent, they were right. No other publisher is as known for their covers as Fiction House. Almost every single one features a woman in some sort of trouble, usually wearing a skimpy outfit. More often than not, women were also portrayed in a position of strength and power. This powerful cover shows that the woman is also armed and ready to defend herself against the attacker as the man continues to fly the ship. Collectors also know that while the cover art often lacks a proper artist’s credit, many of them were actually done by women. When the studio producing the covers for Fiction House got hit by the draft during WW II, they ended up hiring women artists to cover the shortage. When the War was over, Fiction House found themselves with a surplus of artists and they used everyone they could. This is one of the reasons that collectors of Fiction House value the titles so much. Another reason is the stories themselves. They were usually very well written and the art would often match or exceed what was portrayed on the cover. This issue features art by the incomparable Murphy Anderson and George Evans. Planet Comics lasted until the winter of 1953 when it was canceled with issue # 73. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC-graded NM 9.4. This is the second highest graded copy listed on the CGC census.
