Item Description
When Superman first hit, DC immediately registered trademarks for other super-type characters. They registered Superboy, Supergirl and Superwoman. Only two of those three names ever became a reality. Superboy showed up about six years after Superman’s initial success and Supergirl didn’t show up until this issue. She is featured on the cover and in a tryout story; her actual debut is a little less than a year later in Action #252. That is what makes this issue of Superman so desired by collectors. It is a secret part of DC history. The cover features Supergirl as we almost know her. The biggest difference between this appearance and her eventual image is the shorter hair and the red skirt she sports on this cover. Curt Swan’s cover is a nicely structured story in itself. In a single image he captured Supergirl’s incredible power, but it is the look he gave Superman that really set the tone. He doesn’t seem to know what is going on. He isn’t surprised so much as perplexed by her appearance. The issue also features a return to Krypton for Superman, and the writing of famed Captain Marvel scribe, Otto Binder. He spent a lot of time at DC when Fawcett closed the door to comics in 1953. He ended up writing Supergirl’s official introduction to the world in the aforementioned Action #252. The interior art is by Dick Sprang and Stan Kaye. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified NM- 9.2 According to the CGC Census; this is the highest graded copy they have ever seen.
