Item Description
The tin litho toy w/built-in key is 3x5.5x7" tall and comes in box w/illustrated paper label on the lid. Box is marked w/distributor name "Borgfeldt" as well as "Made In Germany, © 1922 Fontaine Fox." Box label features Fontaine Fox art. Box has obvious wear, lid has large traces of moisture staining, bottom center has .25" and 1" puncture marks w/.5" spot of surface paper removing letters "AI" of name "Fontaine." Lid has split along left edge w/brown paper tape repair on inside, top left corner is missing 1" piece. Box bottom has 1x1.5" piece missing from one edge as well as tape repairs to interior but still tight. Box remains about VG for display. The nicely designed toy includes diecut figure of the Skipper. This is the lesser-known and scarcer variety designed to run on tracks. Has actual train wheels while the standard version has totally different style wheels and windup mechanism. On the standard version, the toy travels forward in a rocking motion, the trolley then stops and shakes slightly as the Skipper turns the controller before continuing on its way. This variety is designed simply to continuously travel around a set of tracks although these apparently did not come w/toy. Toy has very lt. aging, some tiny scattered paint nicks. VF. Provenance of Philip Samuels collection.
