Item Description
The doll is 14" tall, comes with accessories as well as in nicely illustrated box. By Gund, ©1961. Box has scattered wear, mostly to end flaps, top flaps have splits with tape repairs to interior but all flaps remain. Box VG. Doll is stuffed plush with soft vinyl head and hands, felt jacket and glasses. Attached to back of doll is speaker cord and amplifier unit, doll has a built-in speaker. This is designed to connect to an RCA Victor tape cartridge recorder unit that was sold separately and therefore not included with this lot. Doll does come with a large pre-recorded tape cartridge featuring the voice of Professor Ludwig Von Drake singing songs and telling stories. This features "Little Wet Riding Hood, Jack And The Cornstalk, Aladdin And The Eenie Weenie Genie, Sleeping Beauty." This tape comes in separate box with Ludwig illustration, Ludwig doll also appears on the instruction sheet. Paul Frees was not only the voice of Ludwig, but also the ghost host voice for the Disneyland and Disney World Haunted Mansion attractions. Ludwig was created to be the spokesman for the Disneyland Anthology TV series when it switched to NBC and was re-named Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color in 1961. NBC was owned by RCA at the time and Ludwig was used in a variety of corporate promotions, this doll was a key element in this promotion. This doll and related back story is thoroughly detailed in issue No. 68 of Tomart's Disneyana update in a two-page spread and this is the very same example featured in that article and comes with a copy of that issue. Doll has just the slightest trace of aging. Set remains Exc. From the Tomart Archives.
