Item Description
1.5" issued by 1964 group formed to protest racial exclusion by the all-white Mississippi Democratic Party at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. The group attempted to be seated as a legitimate delegation at the convention and expected the support of LBJ but he feared a general walk-out by southern Democrats and opposed the seating of the MFDP. LBJ had his prospective running mate Humphrey offer a compromise but this was rejected by the group. The group's delegates staged a sit-in on the convention floor but were removed by security guards and left the convention feeling betrayed. Button reads "Free Elections In Sunflower" with their initials in small type on bottom edge. Surface has a couple of .25" scattered scratches but they show only in reflected light and with normal viewing the piece displays clean and glossy. Also see proof button #418. VF.
