Each of these is a 1" celluloid button comprising a set of 11 known issued in the 1930s, either with a Bastian backpaper or a backpaper reading "Pender Breads/Send The Complete Set of 11 Movie Stars To D. Pender Grocery Co., Norfolk, Virginia, And Get Attractive Prize." As instructed, the vast majority of these buttons were returned to their issuer to obtain the prize so today full sets of all 11 stars are quite scarce. In this group, one button has no backpaper, one has "Pender Breads" backpaper with stain and the other 9 are more or less half of one design and half of the other. Buttons all display totally bright and clean. Any marks shown on Marlene Dietrich are now gone as it was just a small dirt smudge. All display essentially Mint and the 11 consist of: Greta Garbo, Lionel Barrymore, Wallace Beery, Gary Cooper, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich, Marie Dressler, Kay Francis, Clark Gable, Robert Montgomery, Norma Shearer. The Greta Garbo is the primary rarity of this series as there is only one other pinback we know of that pictures her. Also see early and rare 1904 actor/union button #427.
