Item Description
4.75" tall by 5" wide simulated bamboo fence with raised "Jungle Imps By Irene Nye" text and placard reading "Adapted From Comic Strip Character By Winsor McCay." (Text is painted over glaze). At top of fence, head of female jungle imp peers over, complete with hoop earrings, beaded necklace and flower in hair. Based on 1903 comic strip "A Tale Of Jungle Imps By Felix Fiddle," Winsor McCay's first published comic strip. In the late 1930s, after McCay's death, his son Winsor McCay Jr. revived the elder McCay's characters. Ceramic artist Irene Nye, inspired by the character's popularity, created a series of glazed ceramic figures based on the Imps in the 1950s. This piece in particular appears to be a store display piece. Imp's head was at one time broken off of fence and has since had glue repair. Three tiny chips to textured hair which has usual dust soiling. Scattered light crazing as is typical with ceramics of this nature. Still displays Exc. Also in lot are two 4-5/8" tall "Belle" model no. 206 female Imp figures. Each has model number and Irene Nye © incised underneath feet. Bare-breasted figures came with hoop earrings, bead necklace, flower in hair and copper bracelet. One is complete, other missing earrings, bracelet and flower. A few scattered tiny chips in hair which has typical dust soiling. Complete Imp also has paint wear to red of mouth which was applied over glaze. VF/Exc. Incomplete Imp also has .25x.5" repair to break on right foot. Displays VF. Wonderful design and color. Great detail. Scarce due to limited distribution. See following 3 lots #1470-1472.
