Auction #195-Part II
Items 994-2570 in Auction 195
Item Description
8x10" sepia tone photo still for Paul Leni's 1928 silent film. This American film by German expressionist Leni stars Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine, a man mutilated with a frozen grin. It is Veidt's appearance that is credited as inspiration for Batman villain The Joker. Seen in this still, Gwynplaine stares at the viewer, a deranged look on his face further complimented by his horrific smile. The comparison is easy to see. Still has 1" tear at upper right-hand corner with tape repair to reverse. Bottom left-hand corner has 2" crease and .25" tear. Would frame for a VF display.
