Item Description
14" tall composition head, hands and straw-stuffed fabric body doll by Horsman. ©EIH 1914 although doll was probably released c. 1921 as doll closely resembles how Coogan appeared as Charlie Chaplin's ward in 1921's "The Kid." Coogan was born in 1914 and .5x2" paper label on front of overalls reads "Jackie Coogan Kid - Licensed By Jackie Coogan - Patent Pending." Original 7/8" rwb button complete with Pioneer Novelty backpaper. Button shows light aging and wear. Still glossy and VF. Dolls were issued in variety of costumes, this version comes with orange shirt and olive gingham coveralls, brown fabric shoes with cardboard soles. Also comes with bw gingham cap and brown mohair. Doll was molded with .75x1" oval hole in head as produced. As such, hair and hat come loose but can still be displayed atop head. .5", 7/8" and 1.25" cracks to forehead and painted eye details have flaked off as have some mouth details. Color rubs to cheeks. Head is VG. Jointed arms end in compo hands which have some paint wear to fingers. Outfit has a few areas of light staining, by button and on brim of cap. Light fraying of shirt material at neck below chin. Outfit is Fine-VF overall. Rare doll.
