Item Description
1.25" button used as a giveaway by "High Admiral Cigarette" with their name on the upper curl as is the case with our preceding item. Also complete with 1897 W&H backpaper. Muchinsky lists as item #14 and notes that John L. Sullivan refused to fight Jackson ostensibly because of Jackson's race. Because of his race, Jackson was never allowed to fight for a world championship title. The caption on this button "Don't Bother Me" likely refers to Jackson's exclusion from participating in the quest for the title. Extreme rim edge has pair of dot marks in the cello as made and not damaged. Condition is outstanding and the piece displays Mint. The first button ever to depict an African American boxer. Hake book Collectible Pin-Back Buttons photo example Boxing Section #44. Comes with Hake's COA.
