Item Description
Around 1915, Whitehead & Hoag developed buttons which had clear celluloid on certain areas of the front and then colored foils placed on the reverse would show through with deep reflective coloration. They did a button like this for Metropolitan Life, one for a movie serial by Pathe and one for Los Angeles County featuring oranges. Here is a first-seen featuring a gorgeous rose with green leaves for "Portland, Oregon The Rose City." Celluloid has two tiny dimples over the rose area and 3 on the leaf areas but just catching reflected light and in most circumstances the piece displays Mint. Strangely, the W&H name does not appear on the item. The back of the piece is a covered sheet of tin with a raised mirror image of both the text and rose showing on the button's front. The high expense of this process greatly limited its use.
