Item Description
1-5/8" deep by 3.5" wide by 5" long stiff cardboard box. Among the earliest three dimensional campaign items. Hake Political Buttons Book III pictures two examples (JQA3007-3008) and notes a third slogan variety but is a fourth unlisted slogan and design variety. Surfaces are covered in gold paper with embossed floral patterns and all edges are covered by yellow paper. Lid top has gold and white cord surrounding raised center area 2.25x3.5" that serves as pin cushion. This is covered in velveteen-like soft fabric that has abstract pattern of gray lines surrounding solid gray center area. Center is over-printed in red with slogan "Be Firm For Adams" with red accent below. St. color loss but easily readable. The paper hinge between the lid edge and the back top edge of the box once split. This is professionally repaired. The lid will not stand open and fully upright because of the repaired hinge, but it does open about 90% of the way. Interior lid has raised cardboard edges surrounding rectangular clear glass with paper borders over paper portrait captioned "John Q. Adams." Paper portrait has just minor tanning of bkg. areas. In Hake III, we show the inside of JQA3008, but that example doesn't show his name as does this example. Box interior is lined with pink paper that has only minor tan spotting. Overall Fine condition and one of the earliest, rarest actual campaign items. Only the second example we've been able to offer in 42 years.
