Item Description
Lot of 24. 3.5x5.5". ©1942-43. Set is numbered 301-324. #319 pictures Hitler on a kite. Each is marked King Features Syndicate. Each one has Breger's name and identifies "Overseas" or "Britain." This apparently determined where he was when he did the artwork. When he entered the US Army during WWII he was nationally recognized through his contributions to the Saturday Evening Post. King Features syndicated "Private Breger" but this syndication meant that when he began doing the character for Yank, the Army weekly, a new name was necessary. He came up with the title "G.I. Joe" for the military reference Government Issue and it began June 17, 1942 in Yank. He immediately became one of the most famous and widely read of the WWII cartoonists and the term "GI Joe" was adopted first by soldiers and then the homefront as the popular term for the American foot soldier. Breger also produced GI Jerry, satirical cartoons about Adolf Hitler and others in the Nazi regime. All show wear but all are unused. VG/Fine.
