Item Description
4x8x5" tall box. 1930. Nicely designed box illustrated on all sides. Front panel features scene on the front porch of the Fresh Air Taxi Cab Co. with Amos and Andy shown behind front window, back panel is seen of them driving their cab and running over puddle of water which splashes in a police officer's face. Right and left side panels show front of lodge hall and temporarily closed bank. Top and bottom panels feature same portraits of them. The inside end flaps have additional cut-out pieces including barrel of wood, lamp, potbellied stove, coat rack and table. Box has a newer inner flap of buff cardboard. The right end panel showing bank front is a color copy replacement which matches perfectly to the rest of the box. Front panel has .5x1.5" triangular piece replaced at lower left corner. Back panel has .25x1.5" strip along left edge professionally replaced. Box has neat glue repairs along edges, some other tiny color touch-ups, all of which blend. As box has a new liner, condition is tight and appearance for display is VF. Toy comes with additional 5x7.5" thick cardboard sheet with cut-out standup figures of Amos and Andy, their dog and a basket of rolled up papers. Has vertical crease at center plus an additional 4" horizontal crease running from left edge to center. Other light edge wear but Fine. Toy is complete with horseshoe hood ornament and crank plus separate figures of Amos, Andy and their dog. Also has the original plastic windshield. Car's body has Amos and Andy related text including "Fresh Air Taxi Cab Company Of America Incorporated" name plus "Check and Double Check," etc. The car has simulated wear and tear such as dents and dings, patched tires, plus mud splotches on fenders and running boards. Toy works and car travels forward before coming to a stop. It then shakes as the figures of Amos and Andy bounce up and down. The toy then resumes its forward motion. The edges of the tires have minor trace of paint wear from use. Body of car shows just slightest trace of wear. A few scattered minute scratches and tiny bit of paint wear on top back edges. Overall still an exceptional, excellent example of this classic Marx toy. Rarely found complete, the box is about ten times rarer than the toy and the cut-out sheet is twenty times rarer. From the Carl Lobel Collection.
