Item Description
1.75" with 1.5" American flag ribbon suspended below and held by the spring pin. When we produced CPB in 1986, we removed the fabric flag as a space saver but it is now back in position. The button was likely issued in 1908 when he became World Heavyweight champion. Button may also have been available in 1910 when he fought James Jeffries, The Great White Hope, on July 4th in Reno, Nevada. Both of these buttons are pictured in "Boxing Pinback Buttons" by Dr. Paul Muchinsky who also notes that while the Jeffries and Johnson buttons that he shows are similar, they were made by 2 different companies and each features a different typeface. Muchinsky's value for the Johnson button is listed as $2,000 and up. Hake book Collectible Pin-Back Buttons photo example Boxing section #36. Comes with Hake's COA. Celluloid has only the slightest traces of light general wear a little visible in reflected light and largely mentioned only for accuracy. Under normal viewing, the piece displays Mint although with a very minor fabric crease on the American flag. Also see J.L. Sullivan autographed card, #881.
