Auction #197 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 991 in auction 197
Item Description
1.25" complete with its unique backpaper by W&H c. 1900. Extensive all-over crazing is somewhat visible in reflected light and somewhat noticeable to the touch but button still has outstanding color. Left side on extreme rim edge has couple of tan dots but blending well. Shows enraged apple peddler beating his fallen horse with Angel of Mercy floating above holding sword in one hand and raising other hand to stop the brutality. Only the second or third we've seen with the "S.F." initials representing San Francisco. Paper text reads "Membership Badge/Presented By The/San Francisco Society/Of Prevention Of/Cruelty To Animals." An early historic and rare button in the movement for animal rights.
