Item Description
Issued in 1934 w/either 3 books and an inflatable Mickey Mouse toy or this version which is a set of 3 books (see "Disneyana" book by Cecil Munsey, page 177). As issued, box has "3 Books" text paste-over on the lid. Great lid art depicts Mickey reading to his nephews, thought balloon depicts image of Big Bad Wolf chasing Fiddler Pig. Minnie watches a third nephew play w/a Mickey figure. Side panels feature images of characters from Little Red Riding Hood and The Big Bad Wolf as well as Donald Duck. Box has overall wear/aging. Some surface paper rubs and flakes along extreme edges, lid has one corner split. Small bit of penciling on lid. VG. The 3 books are by David McKay and include "The Adventures Of Mickey Mouse Book 1," 1931; "Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf/Three Little Pigs," 1933; "Little Red Riding Hood And The Big Bad Wolf," 1934. All are softcovers, each about 6x8.5". 32 pages w/full color art in the Mickey book and bw/red in the other 2. The Mickey book is noted in Overstreet as being "The First Disney Book By Strict Definition." Story refers to Clarabelle as Caroline and Horace as Henry. The name Donald Duck appears in the story for a non-costumed generic duck, not in the context of the character that later debuted in The Wise Little Hen. Each book has lt. cover wear/aging. "Who's Afraid" back cover has tiny corner tip chip and 1" corner crease. This cover is Fine, other 2 covers are VF w/just some additional lt. edge wear. Overall contents remain quite clean and are VF to Exc. While the books individually are by no means rare, they are prized among Disney collectors and the box itself is very rare, only a few boxed sets are known to exist.
