Item Description
1.75x2.75x.5" thick designed as a book with glass covers featuring choice color portrait on reverse of glass front plus reverse glass back with text "Forget Me Not." A similar item by same maker was issued around the time of Zachary Taylor's death in 1850 but this is the scarcer of the two. The glass plates are assembled with cardboard to form ornately embossed spine covering and edges are colored and embossed to simulate the gold-leaf edges of a fine quality book. A gilt foil trim surrounds the borders of each glass panel with a little darkening of left front edge and small, thin 1" piece of trim off rear left edge. Front cover opens and interior has a mirror on the lid's reverse while at right is an open storage area. These items typically have a multitude of defects such as cracked glass, moisture stains, paint loss, etc. While this shows some age, it is quite minor with just a few small marks on front bkg. and the small wear to the trim mentioned previously. One of the very few J.Q. Adams items to include a portrait and this in exceptionally bright color. Rare.
