Item Description
3-5/8” tall by 3-5/8” long solid cast metal ornament with bright silver luster. Hood ornament depicts Bernice The Whiffle Hen who was introduced by Popeye creator E.C. Segar in his strip “Thimble Theatre” prior to Popeye’s introduction. The Whiffle Hen was a lucky creature and was impossible to kill, later saving Popeye’s life. c. late 1920s-early 1930s. Great pose of Bernice with her wings in the air. Base has horseshoe, related to the Whiffle Hen’s lucky properties. Trace of age toning to base and at feet of Whiffle Hen, tiny typical pitting but retains near full luster which remains bright and shiny. VF with Exc. display. Rare and first we’ve seen in our 43 years.
